A research team in the Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Unit of the College of Agriculture at Basra University managed to grow Crocus sativus for the first time in the southern region. Dr. Fatima Ali Hassan, Director of the Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Unit, said that the main objective of cultivating saffron is to know the appropriateness of the climatic conditions in Basra Governorate for the cultivation of this plant, which is considered one of the most important medicinal and aromatic plants because it contains crocin, crostin and safranal and its uses in the food industries to add flavor, taste and color, as well as about expanding the area of its cultivation because its cultivation areas are confined between Iran, Spain and India.
