The Department of Biology Sciences at the College of Science, University of Basra, discussed a master’s thesis entitled (A diagnostic study of parasites that cause diarrhea in Basra Governorate) to graduate the student Nasreen Muhammad Abbas. The study aims to determine the causes of diarrhea resulting from parasitic infections, especially cases of short-term diarrhea.
The study included calculating the percentage of infection with different types of parasites among infected people who show symptoms and people who do not show symptoms, and the study found the presence of many types of parasites in people who are considered healthy. The study found that the sporophytes are the most common causes of diarrhea, which cannot be diagnosed with the usual examination without staining with special dyes, and the lack of staining leads to the mistaken belief that the cause is bacterial and a phenotypic study of the isolated species.

It was also found that most cases of appendicitis and gallbladder inflammation that require surgical intervention are undiagnosed parasitic infections.
