Board research at the University of Basra College of Medicine discussed the effect of early tracheostomy compared to late tracheostomy on the duration of mechanical ventilation and the length of stay in the intensive care unit for brain injury patients. The research presented by student Doaa Muzaffar Abdul Samad aims to compare the effect of early tracheostomy compared to late tracheostomy on the duration of mechanical ventilation and the length of stay in the intensive care unit for brain injury patients.
The research concluded that performing early tracheostomy for head injury patients 7 days before endotracheal intubation significantly reduces the duration of mechanical ventilation and the length of stay in the ICU. The research recommended that a tracheostomy should be performed 7 days before endotracheal intubation for patients with head injuries and those who suffer from loss of consciousness and need endotracheal intubation.
