The College of Science at the University of Basrah organized a seminar entitled (Enhanced biodegradation of hydrocarbons in soil amended with organic wastes) by the graduate student/ Doctorate Satar Aziz Gmais. The study aims using readily accessible and inexpensive materials to speed up the biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons; to promote the capacity of indigenous oil-degrading bacteria and included isolation of bacteria capable of decomposing hydrocarbons from the soils of four oil sites in Basra. 16S rRNA was used to genetically identify the isolates. The study identified 16 bacterial species, and the isolates were screened to determine the most effective species to add to the soil through a bioaugmentation process to boost the biodegradation process, as well as the usage of organic waste in the biostimulation process. and the study was recommended to study the biodiversity of oil-degrading bacteria by creating a broad phylogenetic map and identifying the evolutionary relationships by a specialized scientific team established at the University of Basra in order to contribute to the treatment of oil-contaminated soils, Organic materials, fertilizers, and dispersants developed as the best biostimulation agents are being used in an attempt to put the findings of the study into practice in the field, and searching for inexpensive, readily available, and environmentally favorable household wastes that promotes bacterial growth and consequently hydrocarbon biodegradation.
