A doctoral thesis was researched at the College of Pharmacy at the University of Baghdad entitled (External and in vivo preparation and laboratory evaluation of nanofibers for 6-mercaptopurine to give a fast-acting drug orally) for the student Ahmed Abdel Karim Abdel Abbas Al-Saad at the University of Baghdad College of Pharmacy
The thesis dealt with the formulation of 6-mercaptopurine drug used to treat leukemia and other diseases such as ulcerative colitis and rheumatism in the form of nanofibers by electrospinning method. The prepared drug was tested in the laboratory as well as on rats.
The thesis included the preparation of (9) samples of the drug using different types and percentages of polymers such as PVP and PEO and examining them using an electron microscope device and a drug release test device from the prepared samples to choose the best sample and then testing it on rats to show its effectiveness
The thesis concluded that the preparation of 6-mercaptopurine in the form of nanofibers significantly increases its solubility and drug release rate, which reaches 100%, as well as significantly increases the bioavailability after its experiment on laboratory rats.
