On Sunday morning, 08/11/2020, a master's thesis was discussed in the Department of Arabic Language at the College of
Arts, Basra University entitled " The Concept of Communication in Modern Linguistic Thought".
The thesis presented by the student Tuqa Muhammad Abdul Redha included three chapters. The first chapter dealt with the
concept of communication in the structural and semiotic directions. The second chapter referred to the concept of
communication in functional linguistics. The third chapter showed the concept of communication in deliberating and
arguing .
The thesis aims to shed the light on the communicative side of language in modern linguistic studies, as the researcher
worked on clarifying the positions that dealt with the concept of communication.
The thesis concluded that the concept of communication represents a new trend in the modern linguistic lesson that realizes
the standing of previous studies on the systemic side of language. And functional linguistics is the one that has opened a
wide field for the communicative aspect. Before that, communication was nothing but a concept spread in the folds of
linguistic theories. Due to Jacobson who was the most prominent figure of functional linguistics, most important elements
of communication and its components had been situated and represented a quantum leap in this aspect.
