A master thesis entitled “Movement in English and Arabic Syntax: A Minimalist Study” was discussed in the Department of English at the College of Arts at the University of Basrah.
The thesis presented by researcher Ashraq Abbas Abadi included six chapters (the initial lines of the study, the theoretical side, research methodology, the applied side of the study, results and recommendations).
This study aims to provide a generative analysis of movement (the movement of grammatical elements in the sentence structure) and investigate its nature and types, as well as its effects on the original structures in the grammar of Standard Arabic and Modern Standard English in the light of the minimum program.
The study concluded that Arabic grammar is richer and more flexible than English in terms of movement in terms of its types, provisions, and directions. This is due to several factors, including: the nature of Arabic pronouns and their ability to relate to other words, the diversity of sentence structures (nominative and verbal), and the appearance of inflectional movements at the end of words.
