Professor Dr. Wafa Saadoun Shani, teaching in the Department of Life Sciences, College of Science, University of Basra, participated in discussing a master’s thesis / at the Southern Technical University / College of Health and Medical Technology by the student Haneen Sayyar Azab / Pathological Analysis Techniques Program (Estimation of antibodies to thyroid peroxidase and some trace elements in patients Suffering from Hashimoto's thyroiditis in Basra Governorate). The study aims to measure the level of trace elements (chromium, zinc, selenium, copper) and the level of their effect on the work of thyroid hormones. The study included 50 women with Hashimoto's disease and 46 women as a control group. The study concluded that there was a decrease in the level of chromium and zinc in women with Hashimoto's disease, as well as a decrease in the level of thyroid hormones FT3 and FT4, while there was an increase in the level of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and the level of antibodies to the thyroid peroxide enzyme, while there was no No change in copper and selenium levels is seen in affected women. Recommendations include studying the levels of other trace elements such as cadmium, iron and magnesium and determining their effect on Hashimoto's patients, and eating nutritional foods containing high levels of zinc and chromium to reduce the risk of developing Hashimoto's disease.
