The Geography Department, in cooperation with the Continuing Education Unit at the College of Education for Girls, organized a symposium on assessing the environmental impact of burning tires on the environment, air and soil, presented by lecturer Hanan Ahmed Abdel Karim.
The symposium aims to clarify that burning used plastic tires is a dangerous practice that causes negative impacts on the environment and human health, making it a global problem that requires serious response.
The symposium discussed that the open burning of scrap tires is a common method used to dispose of waste in various parts of the world, and in Iraq in particular, and the open burning of tires emits a toxic mixture of harmful gases such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and volatile organic compounds.
The symposium discussed that waste resulting from burning tires produces other toxic compounds that can seep into the soil and water.
