Dr. Wissam Razzaq Mutashar, Head of the Marine Geology Department at the Marine Sciences Center, participated in the symposium held by the Scientific Affairs Department at the University of Basra in cooperation with the Marine Sciences Center.
His participation included giving a lecture entitled
*Iraqi coasts: The impact of the natural and human factors on their change.*
The lecture focused mainly on three axes, including the definition and importance of the coastal region, the impact of erosion and sedimentation processes in the region, and the role of development in the region, such as the impact of building hard structures (such as sea bridges and concrete walls) and soft structures (such as planting beaches) in protecting the coast from erosion and change.
The lecture showed that development in coastal areas will have a major positive role in protecting them if an approach is followed that combines understanding of the natural and human factors affecting the coast.
