I researched my doctoral thesis in the Department of Geography, College of Education for Human Sciences, University of Basra (car transport in the city / a study in the geography of urban transport)
The thesis by the student (Safa Rahim Muften) aims to shed light on the reality of automobile transportation in the city of Medina by analyzing the most important problems that transportation suffers from in light of the high numbers of population and cars, while finding appropriate solutions, for the purpose of achieving high traffic flow and reducing effort. and time on trips, in order to enhance ease of access.
The thesis dealt with (analyzing the reality of car transportation in the city of Medina, which occupies an area of (1644.9) hectares with a population of (71,891) people in 2022. The study is organized into four chapters. The first chapter deals with the natural and human factors affecting car transportation in the city, while the second chapter deals with the uses of Land for transportation purposes. The third chapter revealed the daily trips in the city, while the fourth chapter dealt with the reality of car transportation.
The thesis concluded a number of conclusions, the most important of which is the decrease in the percentage occupied by transportation use of the city’s land by (16.1%) of the total area of use in the city. The study also found that there is an inability in the network of streets and intersections to accommodate traffic momentum, especially during the morning rush hours. On normal days, it exceeds the morning peak on holidays. The study also showed that most of the city’s intersections fall within level (f), where the average traffic volume is more than one, which indicates the inefficiency of these intersections, as the speed of cars is characterized by an unstable flow.
The thesis recommended raising the level of efficiency of the street network in the study area by increasing the number of its lanes, which leads to increasing its design capacity and accommodating the largest number of cars. And preventing the parking of cars by the owners of shops located on both sides of the street to maintain the flow of traffic, in addition to preventing the entry of large trucks and trucks into the crowded central commercial area during the morning rush hours, due to the crowding that accompanies them, and issuing appropriate laws by specifying a specific time for cars to enter the That area is crowded with traffic
