researched master’s thesis at the College of Education/Qurna, University of Basra (identifying some types of sound-producing insects of the order Orthopetra, Hemiptera, Mantidae and describing their hearing organs in Basra Governorate)
The thesis presented by the student (Khadija Saddam Radi Al-Baydani) aimed to phenotypically diagnose adult insects during field surveys, dissect and describe the hearing organs of the species, compare them between species, and adopt the hearing organ as a taxonomic characteristic.
It included dissecting insect body parts such as the head, thorax, abdomen, wings, legs, and reproductive organs of insects, dissecting the hearing organs, taking measurements of the parts using a unit of measurement of the body and body parts, photographing whole insects, and photographing the body parts and hearing organs.
The thesis concluded that all insect hearing organs were of the tympanic type and in different locations, either in the first abdominal ring or located in the leg of the front legs, with differences in families, species, genera, males and females.
