University of Basra studies the availability of water potential for Al-Safiya Reserve
The lecturer at the College of Education for Human Sciences at the University of Basra, Muhammad Qahtan Nima, presented a scientific study on assessing the water potential for the sustainability of Al-Safiya Reserve.
The research aimed to study the hydrological situation of Al-Safiya Reserve and Al-Hawizeh Marsh, the availability of water and environmental resources necessary for its sustainability, and to know the volume of water nutrients entering and exiting it.
The research included studying a set of hydrological data to assess the volume of internal and external water nutrients that include major rivers such as the Tigris, Al-Mashrah and Al-Kahla and analyzing them to better understand the available water resources and how to manage them effectively to ensure environmental sustainability.
The researcher reached results that could contribute to formulating strategies to preserve Al-Safiya Reserve and ensure its sustainability for future generations.
The study recommended the necessity of reaching an agreement with the Iranian side to open the dam cutting the Karkheh River, and to benefit from the Ramsar Convention on the Protection of Wetlands to ensure a sufficient share for the reserve, and to enact internal laws to preserve natural reserves.
