


Basra University Hosts a Panel Discussion on Drugs and Suicide: Breaking the Chains of Social Stigma
The College of Administration and Economics - Qurna / Department of Finance and Investment at Basra University organized a panel discussion titled “Drugs and Suicide: Breaking the Chains of Social Stigma” on Tuesday, December 17, 2024. The session was led by Assistant Professor Dr. Zahid Qasim Badhan (Head of the Department of Finance and Investment) and Dr. Jabbar Atiya.
The discussion aimed to shed light on the interplay between drug abuse and suicidal tendencies, as well as the role of social stigma in exacerbating these issues. It included analyses of recent studies and field experiences that examined the psychological and social effects of drug use and the importance of raising societal awareness to address these challenges.
The event witnessed active participation from department students, who raised various questions and engaged in discussions about the role of educational and community institutions in tackling these phenomena. They also emphasized the need for psychological and social support for affected individuals.
The speakers stressed the importance of collective efforts to curb the spread of drugs and create a supportive environment to prevent suicide. They highlighted the need to foster a culture of acceptance and break down social barriers that contribute to deepening stigma.
