Prof. Dr. Adel Amala Damd, a lecturer at the University of Basra - College of Education for Pure Sciences - Department of Chemistry, received the Science Day Award for patents in the field of medical sciences, where he won the Science Day Award for the patent entitled (Preparation and identification of maleic acid derivative and proving its effectiveness as an anti-breast cancer). The patent included the preparation of a new chemical compound with available materials at a low cost. The inhibition effectiveness of a series of pathological receptors associated with different types of cancers was studied theoretically using molecular docking. The results of molecular docking proved the high effectiveness of the prepared compound towards protein receptors associated with the proliferation of breast cancer cells. These results were the first indicator of the effectiveness of the prepared compound. The effectiveness of inhibiting live human cancer cells was tested using the MTT method for the MCF-7 cell line, which is a common model for breast cancer in the laboratory. It is widely used to study the biology of breast cancer. In addition, it is used to investigate drug resistance and develop new and effective treatments against this disease. It also studied programmed cancer cell death (Apoptosis). All test results showed that the prepared compound gave high inhibitory activity against breast cancer cells, making it a promising compound as a candidate for inhibiting breast cancer cells.
