Basrah University Conducts Specialized Surgery for a Rare Veterinary Case

The College of Veterinary Medicine at Basrah University, in collaboration with the Veterinary Hospital, successfully performed surgery on a ruminant suffering from a rare inguinal hernia.
A veterinary surgical team operated on a sheep diagnosed with an inguinal hernia, a condition that rarely occurs during pregnancy. It is identified by a palpable, asymptomatic mass in the groin area and typically involves a portion of the uterus containing the fetus due to muscular weakness and tears.
The procedure was carried out three days after the lambs were delivered. Following birth, the uterus returned to its normal position, allowing the intestines to descend into the hernia site. The surgical team repositioned the hernia contents into the abdominal cavity and sutured the torn muscular layer, successfully completing the operation.
