I researched a master’s thesis at the College of Education of Qurna, Department of Arabic Language, University of Basra (the poetry of Abdul Hamid Al-Samawi, a linguistic study)
The thesis presented by student Amjad Adel Rashash aims to address the collection of Abdul Hamid Al-Samawi from a linguistic perspective, where the poetic texts were analyzed on three levels: phonetic, syntactic, and semantic.
The study included the phonetic level: vocal repetition emerged in enhancing the internal rhythm, and stress and intonation played a role in highlighting the meanings. Al-Samawi relied on the diversity of rhymes to give harmonious music to his texts. The syntactic level: he showed interest in morphological and grammatical structures, while employing phrasal verbs for movement and nominal sentences for stability. He also used various grammatical methods such as the question and the call. The semantic level: he focused on the semantic fields and semantic shift, while employing simile and conjunction. And synonymy to enhance meaning.
The study confirmed Al-Samawi’s excellence in employing language to serve meaning and emotional impact, and recommended further studies on linguistic phenomena in his poetry.
