A phd. dissertation at the University of Basrah, College of Administration and Economics, Department of Economics, examined contemporary trends in global maritime oil transport developments, with particular reference to Iraq, for the period 2004-2022.

The dissertation, presented by student Hussein Haider Muhammad Al-Jazairi, aims to identify the nature of the maritime oil transport market and analyze developments in the global fleet of oil tankers and their contribution to oil trade. It also highlights developments in maritime oil transport in selected Arab countries. It then examines the current state of maritime oil transport in Iraq and demonstrates the economic feasibility of building oil tankers in light of the activities of the Iraqi Oil Tanker Company.

The dissertation concludes that Iraq is absent from the global maritime oil transport market, as the Iraqi Oil Tanker Company remains unable to transport Iraqi crude oil to buyer ports due to its lack of crude oil tankers.

The thesis recommended the need to support the Iraqi Oil Tankers Company to build a diverse fleet of tankers after the thesis demonstrated the economic feasibility of building tankers to transport a portion of the exported Iraqi crude oil, similar to the Arab countries producing and exporting crude oil.
