


University of Basrah Organizes an Awareness Seminar on the Scourge of Drugs and Their Health and Social Impact on University Students’ Lives
The College of Administration and Economics in Qurna, in cooperation with the Continuing Education Unit and the Educational Guidance Unit, organized an awareness seminar titled “The Scourge of Drugs and Their Health and Social Impact on the Life of the University Student” on Sunday, April 13, 2025, in the college’s main hall.
The seminar aimed to raise students' awareness about the dangers of drugs. It covered the medical definition of drugs, the reasons behind university students' use, types of drugs, and ways to contact security authorities to report drug use or promotion within the campus.
The seminar was presented by Dr. Arafat Nasser Al-Youssef, Lecturer in the Department of Project Management, and Colonel Ali Hameed Mohsen, Legal Director of the Legal Department at Basrah Police Command / Directorate of Drug and Psychotropic Substances Affairs.
The seminar concluded with several recommendations, including encouraging students to report drug use through toll-free numbers that guarantee confidentiality, raising awareness about avoiding food or beverages from unknown sources, educating parents to keep medications containing narcotics out of youth’s reach, steering clear of bad company, and highlighting the economic and social effects of addiction.
The importance of reporting drug use for treatment was also emphasized, noting that the Drug Police Center in the Al-Shuaiba area has helped rehabilitate more than 500 users, aiding them in overcoming addiction and reintegrating into society.
At the end of the seminar, the Dean of the College thanked the speakers and presented them with certificates of appreciation for their efforts in raising awareness about the dangers of drugs.
