The Department of Qur'anic Sciences and Islamic Education at the College of Education for Humanities at the University of Basra organized a scientific symposium on "Democracy in the Thought of Imam Ali (peace be upon him)." The symposium aimed to shed light on the pillars and foundations of democracy, which Imam Ali (peace be upon him) legislated 14 centuries ago and practiced in all its details in public life. The symposium, presented by Dr. Ahmed Dakhel Khalaty, reviewed the foundations implemented by the Imam (peace be upon him), such as political majorities, free and direct voting, the rule of law, freedom of expression, citizenship, and the quality of the relationship between ruler and ruled, among other interconnected ideals
