A master's thesis from the University of Basrah , College of Medicine, discussed the prevalence of antibiotic resistance, its impact and consequences on society. The research, presented by the student Ahmed Mohammed Nasser, aims to assess the prevalence and distribution of antimicrobial resistance, examine resistance patterns to commonly used antibiotics, evaluate the impact of antimicrobial resistance on individuals and healthcare systems, and explore patients' awareness and behaviors related to antibiotic use. The research concluded that the widespread prevalence of antimicrobial resistance, especially extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing strains and methicillin-resistant staphylococci, along with the irrational use of antibiotics in the community, is needed. Targeted public health interventions, stricter antibiotic regulations, and improved awareness campaigns are needed to combat resistance and promote the rational use of antibiotics.
