The Marine Science Center organized a workshop on the use of probiotics in fish production.
The workshop aimed to improve fish health, promote growth, increase disease resistance, and improve water quality in fish ponds. Probiotics also contribute to improved feed utilization and digestion efficiency, leading to increased fish farm productivity.
The workshop, presented by instructor Shaima Abdul Karim Jaber, included a discussion of probiotics, nutritional supplements made from live bacteria or yeasts. These can adjust the nutritional content of fish feed, enhance immunity, improve digestion, promote growth, increase feed utilization efficiency, reduce disease, and improve water quality. Some types of probiotics break down organic waste in water, helping to maintain water quality, reduce the accumulation of harmful substances, and reduce ammonia.
Probiotics also help improve the absorption of nutrients from feed, meaning fish require less feed to produce the same amount of meat.
The workshop addressed methods for using probiotics by adding them to feed. Probiotics are mixed with fish feed before being fed to the fish. Some types of probiotics can also be added directly to the fish tanks.
