A Master's thesis in the Department of Ecology at the College of Science at the University of Basra examined the impact of climate impacts on the water quality of the Shatt al-Arab River in southern Iraq.
The thesis, submitted by student Zaman Hassan al-Silawi, aimed to assess the impact of climate change on the quantity and quality of Shatt al-Arab River water during the period from July 2023 to May 2024.
The study included five stations from Al-Qurna to Al-Faw. The results showed a significant increase in conductivity, salinity, hardness, and heavy metals, with turbidity exceeding World Health Organization limits.
The study concluded that the Shatt al-Arab River has witnessed significant hydrochemical transformations, particularly in its southern section. These transformations are largely linked to the pressures resulting from climate change.
The study recommended strengthening monitoring systems and water resource management within the framework of climate adaptation.
