A doctoral dissertation in the Department of Geography / College of Education for Humanities, University of Basra, examined the response of commercial use to population growth in the city of Al-Qurna. The study, presented by Adnan Abdul Amir Makki Al-Baaj, aims to identify the reality of commercial use and the spatial expansion, development, and urban growth it has experienced in response to population growth since the city's inception. The study also seeks to identify the nature of the problems and obstacles that hinder its development, as well as to develop proposals that could be adopted in the future. The study also seeks to address the phenomenon of functional confusion and develop appropriate proposals and solutions by distributing these activities and events in an organized manner that enables them to provide better services to the population. The study dealt with: the population of the city of Qurna and its growth since the city’s establishment until the present time and evaluating the extent of commercial response to population growth in the city of Qurna, with a statement of the expansion of the city’s area in response to population growth and the increase in the number of commercial establishments. The study concluded with results, the most important of which is the increase in the population of the city from (53,344) people in the 1997 census to (157,414) people in the year (2023), which represents an absolute increase of (69,636) people
