
In a new achievement added to its academic and scientific record, Basra University has topped Iraqi universities in the 2025 WURI Global Innovation Ranking, securing the 263rd position globally out of 400 universities included in the ranking. It outperformed both the Middle Technical University and the University of Babylon.
The WURI (World’s Universities with Real Impact) ranking is one of the most prominent classifications that evaluates innovative performance and societal impact of universities worldwide. It focuses on qualitative criteria such as innovation in education, entrepreneurship, ethical values, sustainability, and digital transformation.
In this context, Professor Dr. Muhannad Jawad Al-Asadi, President of Basra University, expressed his pride in the achievement, stating:
"This advancement achieved by Basra University in the WURI global ranking is the result of collective efforts by our faculty, researchers, and students, who work daily to foster an academic environment that encourages innovation and community service. This ranking serves as a motivation to continue striving for excellence and competing on the international stage."
The three Iraqi universities that appeared in this year's WURI ranking are:
Basra University – 263rd globally
Middle Technical University – within the 301–350 range
University of Babylon – ranked 353rd
It is worth noting that the WURI ranking is issued annually by Hanseo University in South Korea, in collaboration with several global academic institutions. It emphasizes universities’ ability to provide innovative, interactive educational solutions that respond to societal challenges.
