A doctoral dissertation at the University of Basra examined the hydropolitical analysis of water resource deterioration in Iraq.
The dissertation, submitted by student Shajan Jassim Mohammed, aimed to identify the causes of water deterioration in Iraq and its existing and potential impacts on water security.
The dissertation included the sources of water resources in Iraq, the challenges facing water resources, the consequences of water resource deterioration, and the most important future trends for water resource sustainability in Iraq. The study suggested the importance of Iraqi decision-makers seeking to reach an agreement with Turkey and Syria to formulate a resolution committing all parties to sharing water in the Tigris and Euphrates basin and its uses in a manner that satisfies the riparian states. It also recommended activating the role of water awareness and education to ensure rational water consumption and reduce the phenomenon of waste and depletion of water resources. It also recommended that media, educational, and civil society institutions play an active role in this regard
