A doctoral thesis in the Department of Animal Production at the College of Agriculture at the University of Basra examined the effect of substituting barley with different proportions of urea-treated sugarcane kernels on some productive and physiological traits of Arabian lambs.
The thesis, led by student Alaa Fadel Halil and supervised by Assistant Professor Dr. Jalal Akili Yasser, aimed to determine the effect of substituting barley with urea-treated sugarcane kernels at different nutritional levels, calculated based on body weight, on productive performance, some hematological traits, and the rumen environment of lambs.
The thesis included the use of non-protein nitrogen sources as a source of ammonia to meet the requirements of microbial colonies in the rumen of ruminants. Urea is one of the most important additives used to improve the nutritional value and utilization of roughage.
The thesis concluded that sugarcane husk is available and inexpensive, and can be used in lamb feed, reducing the demand for barley feed and production costs. It also improves digestibility when treated with urea, as well as improving feed conversion efficiency.
