The College of Agriculture at the University of Basra organized a scientific workshop titled "Active Ingredients in Vegetable Crops: Factors Affecting Their Presence, Methods of Estimation, and Their Medicinal Benefits," presented by lecturer Nour Abdul Zahra Jaber.
The workshop aimed to shed light on the chemical classification of active ingredients in vegetable crops, identify the medicinal effects of each compound, and the factors that influence the concentrations of these substances within plants.
The lecturer explained that soil rich in organic matter contributes to an increase in the percentage of active ingredients, while high temperatures lead to a decrease in their concentrations.
The workshop addressed methods for estimating active ingredients using several modern techniques and devices, including optical spectroscopy, microwave technology, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and high-performance liquid chromatography. The workshop explained the mechanism of operation of these devices and the technical differences between them.
The workshop also addressed the medicinal benefits of vegetable crops in reducing the risk of chronic diseases, such as type 1 and type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes.
The presentation discussed the role of okra in regulating blood sugar levels, through its ability to inhibit glucose absorption, improve insulin sensitivity, and reduce oxidative stress, in addition to its effect in limiting the spread of cancer cells.
The workshop concluded by emphasizing the importance of promoting applied research in the field of vegetable crops and utilizing its results to improve the nutritional and medicinal value of agricultural crops, thus contributing to supporting food and health security.
