Under the direct supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Majid Asghar Mohammed Al-Nawab, Dean of the College of Nursing at the University of Basra, the Continuing Education Unit at the College organized a scientific seminar on beneficial and therapeutic microbes versus pathogenic microbes. The seminar, presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Khulood Abdul Karim Hussein, aimed to educate nursing students that not all microbes are pathogenic; only 5% are, while the rest are normal flora. Among these are therapeutic bacteria (probiotics), which are often overlooked, and whose significant health benefits as immune stimulants and producers of numerous metabolic compounds, including essential vitamins and minerals, are not fully understood. The seminar recommended increasing the consumption of probiotic-rich foods. Probiotics are also available in capsule form as dietary supplements and are approved for consumption as they are harmless.
