Zainab Adel Issa, a researcher at the Marine Science Center at the University of Basra, obtained her PhD after defending her thesis entitled “Morphotectonics of the low folds of the Tayeb-Badra region in eastern Iraq using remote sensing techniques” from the Faculty of Science, Department of Earth Sciences.
The study included a morphotectonic assessment of the Tayeb and Badra regions by applying morphotectonic evidence to the rivers in the study areas. Differential synthetic aperture radar (DInSAR) technology was also applied (DInSAR) by selecting a specific earthquake for each area and monitoring the ground deformation resulting from this earthquake by measuring the vertical and horizontal displacement of the study areas after the earthquake occurred.
The results obtained from the morphotectonic evidence indicated the presence of active tectonic activity in both study areas.
The study recommends the need to monitor earthquakes and conduct periodic studies to determine the extent of their impact on the two study areas. The study also recommends conducting several tectonic, seismic, and geomorphological studies
These ongoing studies will contribute to a better understanding of tectonic activity and provide valuable information for taking the necessary measures to mitigate seismic risks.
