The College of Education for Humanities at the University of Basra organized a series of awareness seminars on the dangers of drug abuse, in line with the directives of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research aimed at raising community awareness of the seriousness of this phenomenon and reducing its spread among different segments of society.
The seminars aimed to highlight the psychological, health, religious, legal, and social aspects related to drug proliferation, in addition to strengthening the role of educational institutions in disseminating a culture of prevention and intellectual resilience.
The first seminar, organized by the Department of Educational Guidance and Counseling, featured an extensive discussion on drug addiction and its psychological and health effects. The speakers addressed the most prominent factors leading to addiction and its negative repercussions on the individual, the family, and society, emphasizing the importance of guidance programs and psychological support in the recovery process.
The second seminar, held by the Department of Quranic Sciences and Islamic Education, addressed Islamic law and its stance on drugs, reviewing the religious texts that prohibit drug use and trafficking, and affirming that preserving the mind and life is one of the fundamental objectives of Islamic law. The third seminar, organized by the Department of Educational Guidance and Counseling, was titled "Drugs: A Legal Perspective and Guidance Interventions." It discussed Iraqi laws related to combating drugs and mechanisms for dealing with users and traffickers, in addition to the role of educational guidance in promoting positive behaviors among youth and preventing their involvement in deviant behaviors.
The fourth seminar, organized by the Department of History, addressed the drug trade and its internal and external effects on countries, focusing on the repercussions of smuggling networks on national security, the economy, and society, as well as their impact on international relations.
As part of the awareness activities, a series of educational posters illustrating the effects and dangers of drug abuse were printed and distributed throughout the college to reinforce the guidance messages among students and visitors.
