Under the patronage of the President of the University of Basra, Professor Dr. Muhannad Jawad Kadhim, and the direct supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Majid Asghar Muhammad Al-Nawab, Dean of the College of Nursing, the Continuing Education Unit, in cooperation with the Student Activities Unit and the Educational Guidance Unit, organized an awareness seminar entitled "Traffic Culture and Avoiding Traffic Accidents." The seminar was presented by Colonel Salah Ramadan Al-Asadi, Director of Media and Public Relations for Basra Traffic.
The seminar aimed to highlight the dangers of traffic accidents, which claim the lives of approximately 1.19 million people annually, in addition to causing non-fatal injuries to between 20 and 50 million others, many of whom suffer permanent disabilities.
The seminar revealed that traffic accidents in the country claimed the lives of more than 5,500 people in 2022 alone, most of whom were teenagers and young adults under the age of 29. The seminar addressed the statistical scale of losses worldwide, noting that one person loses their life in a traffic accident every 25 seconds.
The seminar also reviewed the most prominent ways to prevent and avoid road accidents, as well as outlining the most effective strategies for achieving road safety.
The seminar witnessed a distinguished attendance of faculty members, researchers, and students from the college, who actively participated through enriching scientific discussions and insightful contributions, thus contributing to strengthening this culture and disseminating accurate information among students and the university community.
