The College of Agriculture at the University of Basra organized a scientific workshop entitled "The Role of Volatile Compounds in Plant Response to Environmental Conditions."
The workshop aimed to introduce volatile compounds as organic compounds released by plants into their environment (air, soil, and water), which play a pivotal role in environmental and biological interactions.
The workshop, presented by Dr. Waroud Hantoush Naama, covered the vital role of these compounds in plant life, highlighting their multiple functions. These include inhibiting fungal and bacterial infections, protecting against environmental stress, and attracting beneficial insects.
The workshop also addressed how plants use these compounds as direct and indirect defense mechanisms, as well as their use as chemical signals that express the plant's needs when exposed to biotic and abiotic stress conditions.
