Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Nursing at the University of Basra, Assistant Professor Dr. Majid Asghar Mohammed Al-Nawab
The Continuing Education Unit, in cooperation with the Pharmacovigilance Division of the Pharmacy Department at the Basra Health Directorate, and the Human Rights Unit at the College of Nursing, organized a scientific seminar on pharmacovigilance under the slogan "Your Safety First." The seminar featured presentations by pharmacists Israa Jamal Al-Din, Rasel Abdul-Jabbar, Ahmed Mohammed Awda, and Ahmed Mohammed Majeed, all from the Basra Health Directorate.
The seminar covered three main topics: an introduction to pharmacovigilance and its objectives; case studies of adverse drug reactions; and information on how to report adverse drug reactions using the electronic form. It was emphasized that the pharmacovigilance system encourages confidential reporting without legal repercussions, particularly regarding medication errors, thus promoting prevention and minimization of such errors. The seminar also covered the safe mixing of medications and intravenous solutions, emphasizing the importance of consulting reliable scientific sources to avoid errors resulting from dilution and reconstitution. The seminar further addressed methods for controlling and minimizing side effects from cancer drugs, including proper storage and reconstitution procedures and the light sensitivity of certain medications. A pre- and post-seminar questionnaire was administered to assess the seminar's effectiveness.
The seminar was attended by Assistant Professor Dr. Sundus Baqir Dawood, Associate Dean for Scientific Affairs, Professor Dr. Abdul Karim Salman, Associate Dean for Administrative Affairs, and a number of faculty members and students from the college.
