The College of Dentistry at the University of Basra held a scientific lecture entitled "The Effects of Bariatric Surgery on Oral Health." The lecturer provided a comprehensive explanation of obesity as one of the most significant public health challenges.
The lecturer, Dr. Rafida Majeed Abdul-Hussein, discussed the impact of bariatric surgery on oral health six months after the procedure, highlighting both the positive and negative effects on the gums and oral tissues.
The lecturer explained the causes of the negative effects, most notably deficiencies in essential nutrients such as vitamins and minerals, which can affect gum health and lead to inflammation or other oral problems in some patients.
The lecture aimed to raise awareness among students and healthcare professionals about the relationship between bariatric surgery and oral health, enhance their understanding of the body's changes after these procedures, and enable them to provide appropriate preventative guidance to patients to ensure the maintenance of oral and gum health.
