
The College of Dentistry at the University of Basra organized a scientific seminar on thyroid disorders and their relationship to oral health. The seminar addressed the most important thyroid disorders and their direct impact on oral and dental health.
The seminar, presented by Assistant Professor Hanaa Khazal, included an introduction to the functions of the thyroid gland and its role in regulating metabolism and growth. It covered key conditions such as hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, as well as thyroiditis and its systemic effects on the body.
The seminar highlighted that the effects of thyroid disorders are not limited to general symptoms but also manifest clearly in the mouth. It emphasized that oral examination can contribute to the early detection of these disorders by observing unusual changes in the gums or jawbone.
The seminar concluded by stressing the importance of collaboration between endocrinologists and dentists to achieve accurate diagnosis and develop a comprehensive treatment plan. It also emphasized the necessity of regular follow-up for patients with thyroid disorders to maintain their oral health.
