A master's thesis at the College of Agriculture, University of Basra, investigated "The Effect of Tip Pruning and Cobalt Spraying on the Growth and Yield of Some Green Cowpea Varieties Cultivated in the Desert Region of Southern Iraq."
The thesis, presented by researcher Sabah Hassan Awda, aimed to evaluate the effect of tip pruning and different concentrations of cobalt to determine the most suitable green cowpea variety.
The study included a field experiment designed to determine the response of the varieties to tip pruning and cobalt spraying. Vegetative growth indicators, chemical characteristics, and yield components were studied and compared with a control treatment.
The thesis recommended selecting the local variety, which demonstrated tolerance to the harsh environmental conditions prevalent in the region, such as salinity and high temperatures. It also recommended tip pruning when the plant has developed 4-5 true leaves and spraying the plants with cobalt at a concentration of 8 mg/L to improve growth indicators and productivity.
