The College of Education for Women Holds a Scientific Lecture on Arabic Dictionaries and Their Development
Assistant Lecturer Ibtihal Fouad, from the College of Education for Women, delivered a specialized scientific lecture on Arabic dictionaries, beginning with Al-Ain Dictionary by Al-Khalil ibn Ahmad Al-Farahidi, then moving on to Lisan Al-Arab by Ibn Manzur, and Muqayis Al-Lughah by Ibn Faris. This lecture aimed to enhance students' lexicographical awareness and connect them with primary linguistic sources.
The lecture aimed to introduce students to the concept of the Arabic dictionary, its origins, and its development, while explaining the systems for arranging lexical entries, such as the phonetic system adopted by Al-Khalil in Al-Ain, the alphabetical system in Lisan Al-Arab, and the semantic approach based on roots and meanings in Muqayis Al-Lughah. It also highlighted the importance of dictionaries in understanding words and determining their meanings, and their service to students and researchers in the fields of language, literature, and Islamic studies. The lecturer addressed the most important types of dictionaries, such as general dictionaries, specialized dictionaries, historical dictionaries, and dictionaries of words and meanings, explaining the role of each type in meeting the needs of research and study, and how to practically benefit from dictionaries in reading, analysis, and academic writing.
The lecture witnessed remarkable interaction from the students through questions and discussions, which contributed to deepening their understanding of the nature of lexicographical work and its impact on preserving the Arabic language and facilitating its learning. The lecturer emphasized the college's commitment to holding such scholarly events that enhance the students' cognitive and linguistic level.
