A master's thesis at the College of Agriculture, University of Basra, was titled "Bioremediation of Organic Pollutants Using Algae."
The thesis, submitted by master's student Zahraa Jabran Abdul Hassan, aimed to evaluate the efficiency of certain algae species in removing organic pollutants from contaminated water and wastewater under laboratory conditions, as well as their ability to remove essential nutrients.
The study included estimating the resulting biomass, evaluating the efficiency of the treatment system, and determining the time required to achieve optimal efficiency. This was accomplished through the design of a treatment system based on successive tanks, including a mechanical filter and an algae tank.
The results demonstrated the system's high efficiency, making it a sustainable and environmentally friendly option.
The study recommended adopting algae treatment as a sustainable and low-cost solution, while also promoting the economic viability of utilizing the resulting biomass.
