The Marine Science Center at the University of Basra organized a course entitled “The Effect of Zinc Nanoparticles in Sterilizing Potable Water and Breaking Down Pollutants in Water and the Environment.”
The course aimed to explain the unique physical and chemical properties of zinc nanoparticles in sterilizing drinking water from biological contaminants (bacteria and toxins) and breaking down organic dyes that pollute water and the environment through photo-catalytic oxidation.
The course, lectured by Dr. Shaima Awad Bajai, included the effectiveness of zinc oxide nanoparticles as an environmentally friendly agent in sterilizing drinking water by eliminating microbes and decomposing polluting dyes (such as green malachite). The topics covered included preparation methods, particle characterization, and biological applications as antibacterial agents, biofilms, and oxidation, to provide innovative and low-cost solutions for treating contaminated water.
