A doctoral dissertation at the College of Agriculture, University of Basra, investigated "The Response of Rye Wheat Varieties to Planting Dates and Seeding Rates under the Conditions of Basra Governorate."
The dissertation, presented by researcher Ali Adnan Hassouni Al-Hajami, aimed to determine the most suitable planting date, the optimal seeingding rate, and the most efficient varieties to achieve the highest yield of green and dry fodder and grain as a dual-purpose crop.
The results showed that the early planting date (October 20) was superior in most growth and yield characteristics compared to the late planting date (November 20). The seeingding rate (160 kg ha⁻¹) achieved the best grain yield, while the rate (180 kg ha⁻¹) recorded the highest fodder yield. The variety 'Farah' outperformed in most of the studied characteristics.
The study recommended adopting this combination and expanding the cultivation of rye wheat to suit the conditions of southern Iraq.
