The College of Education for Women at Basra University organized a seminar on greetings and partings in Iraqi dialect and their types. It aimed to present these polite social phenomena that increase the relationship bonds in Iraqi society.
The seminar, organized by the Department of History and presented by Dr. Alaa Abdul-Imam Abdul-Zahra, included the phrases of greeting and parting, which are among the polite daily phrases that Iraqis use to maintain communication and good relations among them, as Islam recommended doing so. The speaker usually begins his speech with greetings and ends his communication with others with partings.
Abdul Zahra added that greetings in Iraqi dialect are divided into two types: formal and informal, depending on the nature of the situation and the relationship between the speaker and addressee. The most commonly used greeting phrase is "peace be upon you" or phrases that refer to the times of the day such as "good morning" and "good evening."
Intonation plays an important role on the pronunciation of these phrases and adds various emotional meanings. The gender of the speaker also affects the pronunciation of these phrases.
