Under the patronage of the President of the University of Basrah, Professor Dr. Muhannad Jawad Kazim, and in the presence and supervision of the Dean of the College of Arts, Professor Dr. Majid Abdulhamid Al-Kaabi, the Assistant Dean for Scientific Affairs and Postgraduate Studies, Professor Dr. Haider Abdulredha Al-Tamimi, and under the chairmanship and administration of the Head of the Department of Translation, Professor Zainab Sami Hawl, and with the attendance of the General Coordinator, Assistant Dean for Administrative Affairs, Professor Dr. Mohammed Abd Kazim, and the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed Mani’ Houshan, the Department of Translation / College of Arts / University of Basrah held its Fifth Annual Scientific Conference for the academic year 2025–2026 entitled:
“Translation in a Changing Technological World”
under the slogan:
“The Status of Translation and the Human Translator in the Modern Digital Age”
on Wednesday, 6/5/2026, at the Grand Hall of Arts (Theater).
The conference was inaugurated by the Dean of the College, who stressed the importance of such conferences as they address modern technological topics that serve society and enhance means of advancing knowledge and analytical thinking in line with labor market demands. This was followed by a speech delivered by the Head of the Department regarding the conference, its objectives, mission, and future vision for organizing further scientific conferences in this field.
The conference included several themes addressing the impact of artificial intelligence on translation studies, linguistics, and other related fields. Participants included distinguished professors from the department, among them Professor Dr. Jassim Khalifa Sultan Al-Maryani, Lecturer Ahmed Faleh Rabee’, Assistant Lecturer Shahd Rahim Maktoof, student Abbas Imad Jassim, and student Fatimah Haider Ismail. From the Department of English, Assistant Professor Dr. Bahija Jassim Mohammed participated; from the Department of History, Professor Dr. Adel Hashim Ali; from the University of Mosul, Professor Dr. Hala Khalid Najm and Lecturer Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Hammoud; from the Iraqi University, Assistant Professor Dr. Ibrahim Talaat Ibrahim; and from Shatt Al-Arab University, Assistant Professor Hashim Kattaa Lazim. The conference was attended by many lecturers, students, and relevant community figures.
The presented research papers included rigorous scientific information and facts that highlighted the role of artificial intelligence and its impact on the aforementioned fields in improving machine translation tools, text analysis, and methods of dealing with phrases and sentences that cannot be translated, in addition to uncovering the earliest sworn translators in the cradle of Sumerian and Akkadian civilizations. The research presentations were distributed over two sessions, each including five papers.
The conference concluded with a speech by the Dean, who praised the success of the conference and the efforts of its organizers and participants. He recommended the continuation of such conferences as they address the latest scientific and technological developments related to artificial intelligence, which has become a central theme in scientific and humanities studies across various fields. He also recommended continuing the annual scientific conferences dedicated to postgraduate students in the department, the latest of which had preceded this conference by two days. Certificates were then distributed to the participants.
