A doctoral dissertation at the University of Basra investigated the performance evaluation of three potato varieties under six combinations of nitrogen and phosphate fertilizer levels, organic fertilization with cow manure, and the estimation of some of their genetic traits, as well as studying the stability of the varieties.
The dissertation, presented by researcher Ali Ziyara Bakhibakh Al-Azraqi, aimed to determine the optimal levels of nitrogen and phosphate fertilizer application and their effect on the growth, yield, and quality of the potato varieties, to assess the genetic characteristics of the traits, to understand the response of the varieties, and to select the most efficient in utilizing nutrients and implementing integrated fertilization management.
The study showed the superiority of the Bureen variety in both seasons, recording the highest marketable and total tuber yield. Increasing the nitrogen and phosphorus application levels with the 240 N + 120 kg P ha⁻¹ treatment, along with the addition of organic fertilizer, significantly increased the total tuber yield and quality characteristics in both seasons. Genetic variation was high in both the spring and autumn seasons for the total yield trait compared to environmental variation. The study recommended planting the Bureen variety with the 240 P + 120 N kg ha⁻¹ fertilizer combination and the addition of organic fertilizer to achieve the highest quantitative and qualitative yields, as it is more stable than other varieties.
