A faculty member from the Department of History at the College of Arts, University of Basrah, Professor Dr. Nazim Rasham Matooq, participated in the defense of a PhD thesis entitled “Higher Education in Iraq (1970–1990)” at the College of Education for Human Sciences, University of Babylon, on Thursday, May 14, 2026.
The thesis shed light on the trajectory of higher education in Iraq across two distinct historical periods. The first focused on the 1970s, while the second examined the 1980s, highlighting the structural transformations and key differences that emerged between the two eras.
The study was structured around four main chapters, providing a comprehensive examination of educational policies and academic institutions throughout the period under review.
The thesis concluded with a number of important academic recommendations, most notably:
1. Strengthening the pioneering role of universities by giving higher education exceptional priority as a fundamental pillar for the nation’s advancement and development.
2. Reviewing and updating academic curricula to ensure alignment with the evolving demands of the contemporary labor market.
3. Activating the concept of the “productive university” and enhancing its interactive role with society and state institutions.
