The College of Dentistry at the University of Basrah held a workshop for postgraduate students entitled “Practical Applications of Safety Data Sheets in Laboratories,” with the participation of a number of postgraduate students.
The workshop, presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Taha Yassin, covered the definition of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and their importance in educational and research laboratories.
The workshop aimed to enhance students' awareness of the hazards of chemicals and how to handle them safely. It also trained them to read and understand the health hazards caused by chemicals and to recognize occupational safety and health requirements according to internationally recognized standards for prevention.
The workshop included a practical demonstration of chemical risk assessment mechanisms, the use of personal protective equipment, and emergency procedures within laboratories. It also included practical applications of hazard assessment models for hazardous materials, contributing to a safe laboratory environment that supports academic and research work.
The workshop witnessed a positive response from graduate students, as it contributed to raising the level of laboratory culture and promoting occupational safety concepts during research and applied work within laboratories.
