The study aims were investigated the presence of pesticide residues in specific types of fruits and vegetables traded in the local markets in Basrah Governorate and to evaluate their safety for human consumption by comparing the calculated concentrations in them with the global maximum permissible limits (MRLs).
The study included monitoring about 98 pesticides residues belonging to 24 types of pesticides of different categories in (57%) of the studied samples, which included Figs, Apples, Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Green Peppers, Pears, Eggplants, Celery, Basil, Cress, mint and Purslane for the period from September 2019 to August 2020.
The study recommended the establishment of a center for periodic laboratory examination (weekly / monthly) on random samples of all food commodities traded in the markets to assess their safety for consumption.
