A master's thesis was discussed in the Department of Ecology at the University of Basrah entitled Measuring of concentrations of some heavy metals in the water and sediments in some stations at shatt al-Arab River by MSc. Student Abdullah Hammood Hussain.
The study aimed to determine the pollution of heavy in the Shatt al-Arab River and the seasonal, spatial changes on the concentrations of these elements. The thesis included heavy elements sources, importance, damages, forms of their presence in water systems and the most important reasons that led to the increase of these elements in the Shatt al-Arab river. The study recommended establishing wastewater treatment units before throwing it into the river in order to reduce the pollutants. Treating industrial and agricultural wastewater and recycling it before discharging it directly into the river.
