A Board thesis in Basrah University - College of Medicine discussed the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis with long-pulse indi-Y laser laser in comparison to intralesional injection with sodium stibogluconate or ciprofloxacin treatment. The thesis presented by student Anwar Qais aims to compare the clinical effect of the long-pulse indi-yak laser in treating cutaneous leishmaniasis with intra-lesion injections of sodium stibogluconate or ciprofloxacin (injection every two weeks). The thesis concluded that the long-pulse indi-yak laser was as effective as intralesional injection of 0.2% Ciprofloxacin in treating cutaneous leishmaniasis (every two-weeks injection method). The cure rate in patients treated with laser was nearly the same if not better than the intralesional injection with sodium stibogluconate and it appeared to be less painful and better cosmetic effect than both intralesional sodium stibogluconate and intralesional injection of ciprofloxacin. In addition it is non-invasive, apparently safe, with no worrisome side effects
