Topic & Abstract: The present study is entitled, Investigating Language Chunking as an Effective Learning Strategy to Develop Iraqi EFL Learners’ Fluency at the University Level. It aims at proving that language chunking is a suitable strategy to enhance the Iraqi EFL learners’ fluency at the university level. The hypotheses are investigated by applying a certain selected test, conducted on the fourth-year students at the level of the University of Basra to develop their ability of Language chunks.
Thesis outline: The thesis falls into five chapters. Chapter one, two and three make up the theoretical part, whereas chapter four constitutes the practical side. They are given as follows: specifically, chapter one presents the preliminaries together with a short introduction. Then, it develops to include: problems , hypotheses ,limits, objectives and significance of the study and ends with showing the practical procedures used by the researcher to tackle the problem. Chapters: Two and Three are concerned with the research theoretical background and the review of literature. Chapter Four introduces the methodology of the study. Chapter Five closes up with certain conclusions, recommendations and suggestions for further research studies.
Conclusions: The study has come with certain conclusions. The students have made a great increase of mistakes in choosing the lexical chunks, which means that their Language Chunking use is extremely weak. There are three reasons for this: (a) Language instructions focus on the cultivation of the awareness of Language chunking rather than the use of it. (b) the poor ability of the students to identify Language chunking (c) students concentration on the grammatical rules rather than language use.
